All of us like colours. We can find innumerable colourful objects in nature like flowers, leaves, fruits, birds, animals, clouds etc. But for objects created by us humans, we need organic colourants to give colour to the object.
These organic colourants fall into two classes, viz. dyes and pigments. The key distinction is that dyes are soluble in water and/or organic solvents, while pigments are insoluble in both types of liquid media.
The dyestuff industry is an important segment of the chemical industry and forms an important link with other industries such as textiles, leather, plastic, paper, packaging, printing inks, paints and polymers, etc.
